La Vernia History

The history of La Vernia is a rich and evolving story shaped by early Native American presence along the Cibolo Creek, followed by Spanish and Mexican settlers, and later waves of pioneers from the Old South, Germany, and Poland in the mid-1800s. Originally known as “Post Oak,” the community was officially renamed “Lavernia” in 1859, a name that carries a unique and fascinating origin. Today, the La Vernia Historical Association is proud to preserve and share this heritage through a growing collection of publications, historical research, family legacies, school histories, and documented landmarks throughout the area. From early settlements to modern-day community life, our archives and resources offer a meaningful glimpse into the people, places, and stories that have shaped La Vernia for generations.
