This is the last week to buy tickets for the Guns & Diamonds Raffle – a fundraiser for the La Vernia Veterans Memorial. GREAT prizes!
Please help us raise funds for the beautiful La Vernia Veterans Memorial.
Heritage Museum Hurricane Update
We will not be ready to open the museum as scheduled this Sunday, Sept. 3 due to the necessary preparations we had to make for Hurricane Harvey: We had to move almost all exhibits to a safer area and now must re-assemble each exhibit before we can re-open the museum. Our volunteers are busy with other efforts to assist with hurricane recovery (including their personal losses) so we will re-open as soon as we can. We are thankful that the damage to the museum was extremely minimal but the re-assembly of exhibits will take some time. Our struggles are so small compared to those of others.
Our heartfelt prayers are with everyone who is facing difficulties following the hurricane. We appreciate our volunteers and supporters — and your patience! Thank you.

LVHS Students Win with Calculations
The La Vernia Veterans Memorial recently challenged students from Lisa Moltz‘ La Vernia High School Engineering classes to calculate the number of bricks which will be necessary to fill in the star feature of the Memorial The winners were Juan Moreno and Zachary Moczygemba, whose calculations were the closest to the correct number of 1,390. Project Construction Chairman, Kip Workman, said, “Projects like this require a lot of math.” Each of the winners received a gift certificate to the Den. Many of Moltz’s students had spent time at the memorial with their class, learning about the engineering process for the site and helping to mark the layout for the design features. The Memorial, under construction at the La Vernia City Park, is a project of the La Vernia Historical Association, who welcomed the students’ participation. The students, many with family members who are Veterans, expressed deep interest in the project. Learn more about the La Vernia Veterans Memorial at here.
Searching for descendants of mural photographer
Candelario Alegria was a photographer in Wilson and Bexar Counties in the early 1900s. He captured a beautiful moment in La Vernia’s history when he snapped this image of Chihuahua Street in 1909. His photograph is now the mural on the front of the La Vernia Heritage Museum. We would like to locate his descendants to invite them to enjoy this beautiful image taken by their ancestor. Candelario was married to Isabelle. They lived on South San Marcos street in San Antonio, Texas. They had a son, Jose. Jose’s daughter is Lydia Isabel Alegria. Jose’s son is Joe Luis Alegria, Jr. who married Dora. If you know any of the descendants of Candelario Alegria, please let them know we would love to invite them to La Vernia to see the work of their ancestor. Contact us on Facebook, text 210-392-3281 or email to laverniahistory@yahoo.com. Thank you.
